Food Traditions in Germany.


    German cuisine is very diverse and tasty. Meat dishes are very popular in Germany: wursts, sausages, small sausages (Bratwurst), which are well-known around the world. One of the world-famous dishes in Germany is sausages and sour cabbage (Sauerkraut). Pork – is the most common and favorite food in Germany. Pork wursts and sausages are cooked in many ways, in Germany there are at least 1,500 different types of sausages. For example, smoked sausage (Wienerwurst) made of beef and pork, seasoned with garlic and coriander. This dish is considered to be the progenitor of the American hot dogs.
 
       Each region in Germany is characterized by its special dishes, and is divided into regional. Also such neighbor countries as Switzerland, Belgium and France contributed their taste qualities into German cuisine. Among famous Bavarian cuisine, we would like to point out such dishes as: roast pork with sauerkraut, Bavarian meatballs (Knodel), the famous Bavarian white sausages (Weisswurst) and delicious pretzels. On the cost of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, the traditional dish is a fish, cooked in different ways  boiled, smoked, fried, stewed and served up with different dressings. The traditional dish in the Northern Germany is a thick soup, which ingredients are fish, meat, potatoes and pickles (Labskaus). If we will go to the east along the coast, we may find a large number of dishes with a great variety of fruits and berries: apples with beans, plums with dumplings, black pudding with raisins, goose with prunes. Another interesting fact is that some dishes in Germany are named after geographical locations, such as the Westphalian Ham, Schwarzian ham, Nuremberg gingerbread, Schwarzian cake; these dishes are also very tasty.



 


  Classic German lunch usually begins at 12:00-13:00 and is considered to be the main meal of the day, which consists of several courses, starting with a soup (Suppe), for example: Cream Soup of Asparagus (Spargel-Creme Suppe), potato soup with sausages, soup with cheese, (Käsesuppe) pea soup with sausages, and a popular Berlin soup — "Eintopf". After the first course, the second or main course (Hauptspeise) is served. The menu is very rich, for example: chop (Kotelett), steak, meatballs (Klops), boiled pork knuckle (Eisbein), brisket on ribs (Rippchen), black pudding with raisins, Hamburg’s beefsteak, etc. Not less will pleased you  garnish dishes, which are served with boiled or stewed vegetables, rice, beans, potatoes, traditional potato dishes are — "Kartoffelpuffer" (fried potato pancakes) and bratkartolffen (fried potatoes with onion and bacon). This delicious meal completes the dessert – Nachspeise, or any dish, which is served after the main course. Germans adore beer and very often drink this beverage during dinner meal. This liking for beer testifies the large number of regional varieties of beer: light beer (Helles), the Cologne beer (Kölsch), aged beer (Altbier), unfiltered sorts (Weißbier or Berliner Weiße). Mixture of beer and lemonade in the south of Germany is called – «Radler» or «Gespritztes», and in the north – "Alsterwasser". Mixture of beer and cola is called – "Drecksack", "Schmutz", "Diesel" or "Krefelder". There is a great varieties of popular German beer, and we may judge about Germans attitude towards beer according to the world-famous beer festival – "Oktoberfest", which takes place in Munich in mid-September or early October, and is considered to be the biggest festivals in Germany, which to the last statistics, attracts about 6 million guests from all over the world.
