Districts and Sightseeing in Paris.                                           

     There are 20 districts in Paris, their numbers start from Louvre and go spirally clockwise. 

From the first to the fifth districts.

 

Tuileries garden
      The first district is the Louvre (Arrondissement du Louvre) a historical and traveler’s heart of Paris, located in the Ile de la Cite Island and in the surrounding area. The whole history of the city is reflected in this district; all epochs have left their trace here. Among the world-famous buildings of the district, great interest to tourists, is presented in one of the largest art museums in the world the Louvre (Musée du Louvre), website: http://www.louvre.fr/;
    Tuileries garden (le Jardin des Tuileries); Holy Chapel  (la Saint-Chapelle); majestic medieval castle   La Conciergerie, a former royal palace and a prison; Zero kilometer (Point zéro), the starting point of all French roads; Pont-Neuf, built in the middle of the XVI century; embankment Orfevres (Quai des Orfèvres); the Vendome Square (Place Vendôme), one of the «five royal squares» in Paris;  Rivoli’s Street  (Rue de Rivoli), one of the longest and well-known in Paris (3 km.);  the Concord Square (Place de la Concorde), where the Luxor obelisk from Egypt is situated, it is 23 m height and 250 tons weight.

    Such obelisks, which are also called «Cleopatra's Needle», can be found only in two cities - London and New York. In this square, eight tremendous statues are also located, depicted cities of France. In this district you may also find famous and the first department store - La Samaritainе http://projet.samaritaine.com/, the Vendome Square with the most expensive jewelry boutiques and a huge underground shopping mall, Forum les Halles.


       The second district is the Bourse (Arrondissement de la Bourse), located on the northern shore of the Seine to the Grands Boulevards, and founded in the XIX century on the site of the medieval city walls of Paris. Here you may find Boulevard des Capucines (Boulevard des Capucines), which is one of the four grands boulevards in Paris; among the most important historical monuments of the county Brongniart Palace (1826) (Palais Brongniart), http://www.palaisbrongniart.com/?langue=en.

The Paris Bourse, is the official stock market which gave the name of the district. In addition, here is the famous Basilica of Notre - Dame-des - Victoires (1629-1740); and the largest cinema in Europe - le Grand Rex (2650 seats). If you want to feel the spirit of this district, just walk around the boulevard Sebastopol. Where you will find a lot of shops (with souvenirs, unique jewelry, and the latest fashion clothes) and beautiful architectural ensembles, this place is known for its majestic buildings constructed at the beginning of the XX century for large textile syndicates and most major newspapers and magazines. The architects used new techniques, when the stone walls of the building, are hidden behind the glass facade. A remarkable example of such construction can be found at: 124 rue Reaumur (architect Georges Chedanne, 1905). It will be interesting to visit the center which has been known historically as a multicultural textile and garment manufacturing district – Quartier du Sentier; the Cairo Square (La Place du Caire), the medieval fortress tower – Tour de Jean sans Peur.

      The third district is Temple (Temple), located on the right bank of the river Seine, eastern from the first two districts. It is not one of the most popular tourist attractions, but here you may find the most famous aristocratic quarter of the county – Marais. Beautiful white stone mansions of the nobility of Paris were built in the Italian style in XVII-XVIII centuries. This district is considered as the most romantic areas of Paris.

Cathedrale Notre Dame de Paris
     The fourth district – the Hotel de Ville (Hôtel-de-Ville), is located on the right bank of the river Seine. Such world-famous sightseeing as: Paris City Hall, National Center of Art and Culture Georges Pompidou (Centre national d'art et de culture Georges-Pompidou) and the Cathedral of Notre Dame, Republic Square (Place de la République) and Vosges (Place des Vosges), the oldest town square, Place de la Bastille (Place de la Bastille) and the Stravinsky Square (Place des Stravinski), the Notre Dame Bridge (Pont Notre -Dame) are situated here. This district is a real pearl for those, who like art, the most interesting for you are: Carnival (Carnavalet), where you will find: 
  • the Museum of the History of Paris, Picasso Museum (Musée national Picasso), website: www.musee-picasso.fr,
  •  Cognac-Jai Museum (Musée Cognacq Jay ),
  •  the Museum of French Art of the XVIII century, the tower of Saint-Jacques ( 1523 ), (Tour Saint-Jacques) 
 In this district you will also find such museums as:
  •  the National Museum of technology and craftsmanship,
  •  the Museum of Hunting and Nature,
  •  the European Museum of Photography, website: www.mep-fr.org  
  •  the Museum Plumbing (Brikar),  
  •  the Museum of Art and History of Judaism.


         Geographically, District IV refers to the small island of St. Louis (Ile Saint-Louis), famous for its bridges: Marie (1635), St. Louis (connects St. Louis and the Cité) Turnel, Louis -Philippe and Sully. The construction of bridges refers to the XVI-XIX centuries.

   The fifth district, Pantheon (Panthéon) – is one of the oldest districts in Paris, located on the left bank of the Seine. The famous Latin Quarter, founded in ancient times attracts those tourists, who want to plunge into student life and lively atmosphere. The center of the district – is the Sorbonne University (Sorbonne), a well known university in France. Today the fifth district – one of the most picturesque districts in Paris, where peacefully coexist common houses and college campuses , art studios, small boutiques and large shopping malls, expensive restaurants and bistros for student’s budget . In this district you will find attractions such as the Pantheon (Panthéon), which gave the name of the district, the tombs of famous people of the country are situated here; Boulevard Saint-Michel (Boulebard St. Michel); the remains  of ancient Roman amphitheater I-III centuries, the ruins of the ancient city wall, the Museum of the Middle Ages (Musée du Moyen Âge), website: http://www.musee-moyenage.fr/ang/index.html, as well as one of the oldest Catholic churches: Église Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre (XIII-XV centuries).
